Sir:-
We shall be greatly obliged if His Majesty's Gov-
ernment can assist us in a difficulty which has arisen
in the course of our business through a decision of the
French Customs.
Our steamers load in British Columbia certain
goods, chiefly tinned salmon, destined for France.

these goods are admitted under a special reduced tariff
applicable to Canadian products. It is usually neces-
sary, however, to tranship them from one vessel of our
Line to another in the course of the transit. We find
that such transhipment may take place in Japan or Egypt.

at Hong Kong, where it commonly suits us best to trans-
ship, or at Straits Settlements ports, the higher gener
al tariff is applied. The result is not only serious
inconvenience to us, but injury to the trade of the twa
